Leif and Jean Anderson, co-executive directors of The Springs, partner with The Marriage School by serving as a sharing couple at weekly meetings. “We knew what it was like,” Leif says, “and we received hope and encouragement [from other couples] … We know how much it helped us, and we want to give that to others because marriage is so important.”
Having been in full-time ministry for their entire marriage, they realize that people can tend to put Christian leaders on a pedestal, but Leif and Jean prefer to keep it real. “We’re just human beings,” Jean shares, “and we just happen to be in this leadership position. We’re working out our redemptive story with the Lord, and that is a process that is absolutely going to take a lifetime.” Leif focuses on the blessing of it all: “We’re not perfect in our marriages, it humbles us and causes us to be more dependent on the Lord.”
When asked about Christian couples who report that their marriage is fine, Leif presses in: “Be open to God’s invitation to where you could grow, because we’re always growing in our marriage. Marriage is beautiful, and it’s also one of the hardest things, because we’re so exposed in this weak and vulnerable place. The Marriage School isn’t just for when you hit rock bottom, it’s to help you continue to grow closer to God, closer to your spouse.”
Both ministries are a practical way to invest in your most important relationships. Jean urges, “We want people to come to The Springs when they’re burning out . . . but we really want them to learn how to be proactive, so they start to make plans to come here before they get to that place. And I consider The Marriage School as being very similar - it’s a space couples can come to that can prevent them from getting to ground zero.”
