Even with a romantic backstory and call to full-time ministry, Brad and Heidi Mitchell know that it’s never okay to take marriage health for granted. In their first book together, Ruined to Recovery, they describe how adultery nearly destroyed their marriage.
Heidi urges, “The Marriage School (TMS) isn’t just for couples who have been through adultery [although] it is valuable for those people. You can have a solid great marriage and still TMS is for you because you can learn how to communicate better. You can learn how to handle conflict better. And that’s something that we didn’t do well prior to the affair in our own marriage.”
Through faith and dedication; through humility, repentance, and forgiveness; with the help of an amazing counselor, God not only restored their marriage, He gave them a vision for helping others build stronger marriages. Brad and Heidi are authors of 4 marriage books, popular workshop speakers, and the founders of Build Your Marriage.
Recently, Brad and Heidi shared their testimony at TMS weekly meetings and experienced for themselves the power and effectiveness of the program.
Brad reflects, “We’re conference speakers, so we’re in for a weekend and then gone. And there’s value to that. We’ve seen life change take place in that. And there’s also value in being able to see the same people week after week because you have accountability.” Heidi agrees, “You can go to a conference and get the tools, but how do you practice the tools? Sometimes that can be difficult. Being involved in TMS, it gives you the opportunity to really practice tools and skills because it gives you intentional time set aside to work and develop your marriage.”
Brad is also the lead pastor at The River Church in Fairfield. “One of the things that, as a pastor, I appreciate about TMS is that it’s a place where I can encourage couples in our church to go. In ministry, you often don’t find out about marriage issues until it’s almost too late.” Brad admonishes his fellow pastors, “The Marriage School is an opportunity to strengthen marriages and strengthen families in your church.”
